The Aspirations Program of research represents a sustained and influential contribution to regional, rural and remote (RRR) education in Australia. Over more than a decade, this longitudinal program of research, comprising over 14,000 surveys and 1,000 interviews with students, parents and carers, teachers and community members, has reshaped how post-school aspirations and pathways are understood. By demonstrating that aspirations are consistently high yet unevenly supported by structural conditions, the program has shifted national discourse away from deficit views of rural learners, reframing equity rather than aspiration as the central challenge.

Collectively, more than 20 publications, cited over 1,500 times, demonstrate its scholarly impact. The program has informed Australian Government policy, HEPPP initiatives and national equity strategies, while shaping debates about geography, community and opportunity. Its emphasis on place, schools and community is now widely taken up in RRR research. Evidence of impact is further reflected in over 50 school and conference presentations, as well as two freely accessible online courses—one for parents and community members and one for teachers—each attracting more than 2,000 participants. Together, these contributions extend the program’s reach, strengthening capacity, engagement and evidence-informed practice across RRR contexts.
