Barham High School has addressed a critical rural education challenge—limited access and exposure to opportunity—through an innovative whole-school Equity and Engagement Model.

In rural communities, financial barriers and geographic isolation restrict participation and aspiration. In response, the school implemented a no-cost education model, removing all subject fees, excursions and participation costs to ensure every student can fully engage in learning.

This innovation is strengthened through co-designed partnerships that expand opportunity. The Aspire Academic Credential, co-designed with La Trobe University, connects students to tertiary pathways, while a Stage 5 aquaculture elective, co-designed with the Western Murray Land Improvement Group, provides authentic, industry-based learning. Tertiary tours further overcome rural isolation by exposing students to post-school opportunities.

Supported by a broad curriculum, targeted academic programs and a strong wellbeing framework, this model drives engagement and achievement.

The impact is clear. In 2025, 70% of students achieved Band 5 or 6 results, more than doubling from 31.25% in 2024, while attendance increased to 86.9%, with students attending above 90% rising from 46.1% to 56.2%.

Enrolments have grown from 122 students in 2022 to over 210 in 2026, demonstrating strong community confidence.

This model shows how removing barriers and co-designing opportunity can transform outcomes in rural education.
